Jesus Is the Reason for the Season: Relating the Christmas Festivities Back to God

Updated: Dec 16, 2024

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a whirlwind of excitement, decorations, gifts, and family gatherings. Christmas lights twinkle on every corner, carols fill the air, and we are all reminded that this is a time of celebration. But as Christians, it's essential to pause and remember that Christmas is not just about these outward celebrations—it’s about the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the reason for the season. It’s a simple truth, yet one that can get lost amid the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations. In a world that often focuses on material gifts and the busyness of the season, we have the opportunity to redirect our hearts back to the true meaning of Christmas: the incredible gift of Jesus.

How to Relate the Festive Season Back to God

As we celebrate Christmas, it's important to keep our focus on God’s gift to the world. Here are a few ways we can intentionally relate the festive period back to Jesus:

1. Reflect on the Birth of Christ through Scripture

The Christmas story begins with a humble birth in a manger—God becoming flesh to dwell among us. In the busyness of the season, it’s easy to forget the significance of that moment. Set aside time to read through the nativity story from the Bible.

Scripture to Reflect On:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”—Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

This prophecy speaks to the greatness of the gift we’ve received from Jesus. Reflecting on these words reminds us that Christmas isn’t just a celebration of a baby’s birth—it’s the fulfilment of God’s promise to the world.

2. Make Worship a Part of Your Traditions

Whether you’re hosting a family dinner, attending church services, or even just gathering with friends, make worship a central part of your celebrations. Sing Christmas carols that glorify Jesus, read aloud passages from the Gospels, and make prayer a focal point of your time together.

Scripture to Reflect On:

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’”—Luke 2:10-11 (NIV)

This passage reminds us that the birth of Jesus was “good news” and the source of great joy. Let’s share that joy by worshipping and giving thanks to the Savior who came to bring us peace and salvation.

3. Practice Gratitude and Generosity

Christmas is a time of giving, and there’s no better way to reflect the love of Christ than by giving to others. Whether it’s a financial gift, volunteering your time, or simply offering encouragement, Christmas is an opportunity to reflect on the generosity God has shown us in sending His Son.

Scripture to Reflect On:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”—John 3:16 (NIV)

As we give gifts this Christmas, we can reflect on the ultimate gift God gave us through Jesus. Let your acts of kindness point others back to the greatest gift of all—God’s love and grace.

4. Take Time for Quiet Reflection and Prayer

The festive period can often be filled with noise and distraction. It’s important to carve out time for quiet reflection. Take a moment each day to pause, pray, and ask God to help you keep your focus on Him during this season.

Scripture to Reflect On:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”—Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

This verse reminds us to slow down and recognize that God is in control. As we reflect on the birth of Jesus, let’s quiet our hearts and listen for God’s voice amidst the busyness.

Let’s Keep Jesus at the Center of It All

This Christmas, let’s commit to keeping our focus on Jesus, the true reason for the season. As we gather with family, exchange gifts, and celebrate, let’s remember that the birth of Jesus is the greatest gift we could ever receive. Let us use this time to grow in gratitude, deepen our faith, and share the love of Christ with others.
