Setting Goals with God at the Center: Embrace Who You Are in 2025

Updated: Apr 24

As we step into 2025, many of us find ourselves thinking about the year ahead, the goals we want to set, and the changes we want to make. It’s a natural part of the new year process, but as Christians, it’s important that our goals align with God’s purpose for our lives. True transformation doesn’t come from self-reliance or our own strength—it comes from putting God first and allowing Him to lead us.

1. Start with Prayer and Surrender

Before setting any goals, take time to pray and surrender your desires to God. Ask Him to guide your heart and reveal His will for you in the coming year. It’s easy to rush into goal-setting with our own plans and ambitions, but God has a unique and perfect plan for each of us. The Bible tells us, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9). When we acknowledge God in our goal-setting, we are inviting Him to shape our path and help us make decisions that align with His purpose.

Take a moment each day to ask God for wisdom, discernment, and clarity. Write down any insights He gives you and trust that His plans for you are always good.

2. Embrace Who You Are in Christ

One of the most important things we can do when setting goals is to embrace who we are in Christ. You are wonderfully made, unique, and loved by God. Your value doesn’t come from your achievements, your appearance, or what you do—it comes from who you are in Him.

When you make your goals for 2025, remember that they aren’t about changing yourself into someone else; they are about growing into the person God has already created you to be. Embrace your strengths and talents, knowing that God has gifted you uniquely for His purposes. You don’t have to compare yourself to others or feel pressured to measure up to the world’s standards.

Instead, look to Jesus as your model for growth. He is our perfect example of humility, love, and obedience. When we align our goals with His heart, we are able to live with purpose and joy, knowing that every step we take is in alignment with His will.

3. Set Goals that Reflect His Will

When setting your goals for the new year, remember to seek God’s guidance in every area of your life. Whether it’s in your career, relationships, health, or personal growth, ask God what His priorities are for you in these areas.

God cares about all aspects of your life, and He wants to be involved in every decision you make. When you’re thinking about your goals for the year, consider these questions:

  • What does God want to accomplish in my life this year?

  • How can I use my talents to serve others and glorify God?

  • How can I grow closer to Him through my actions and decisions?

For example, instead of simply setting a goal to lose weight or improve your fitness, you might ask God how you can honor Him with your body, which is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). This shift in perspective allows your goals to become more about living in alignment with His will than just checking things off a list.

4. Let Go of Control and Trust God’s Timing

Sometimes, the hardest part of goal-setting is letting go of control. We want to dictate the timeline, the steps, and the results, but God’s ways are often different from our own. Trusting in God’s timing is essential for walking in His plan. As we set goals, we must be open to the fact that He may lead us in unexpected directions or at a different pace than we anticipated.

Remember that “the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations” (Psalm 33:11). Even when things don’t go according to our plan, God’s timing is always perfect. Trust that He is working behind the scenes, and He will provide what you need when you need it.

5. Take Small, Faithful Steps Forward

As you work toward your goals in 2025, remember that faithfulness is more important than perfection. It’s easy to become discouraged when progress feels slow or when obstacles arise, but God calls us to take small, faithful steps forward.

In Matthew 17:20, Jesus tells us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. This means that even if our efforts feel small or insignificant, God is at work in them. Be patient with yourself, and trust that every step you take is a step closer to His purpose for you.

6. Celebrate His Faithfulness Along the Way

Finally, take time to celebrate God’s faithfulness throughout the year. As you work toward your goals, remember to pause and thank Him for the progress you’ve made, the lessons learned, and the strength He has provided. Celebrate the victories, big and small, knowing that they are a reflection of His goodness and love for you.

As the year unfolds, take moments to reflect on how God is leading you. Each milestone is an opportunity to acknowledge His presence in your life and to give glory to Him for all He has done.

In 2025, let’s commit to setting goals that honor God, embrace who He’s made us to be, and trust in His guidance.

By putting Him first and allowing Him to lead the way, we can enter the new year with confidence, knowing that His plan for our lives is greater than anything we could imagine. Keep Him at the center of everything you do, and watch how He transforms your life as you walk in His purpose.

“The people who know their God will display strength and take action.” - Daniel 11:32
